AMA Supercross Series Tickets - Do Tires Make the Rider?
by Brent Warnken
While James Stewart, Chad Reed and Josh Grant may all be on different teams, they have something definitely in common. The three all competed on Bridgestone tires during the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Competition in Anaheim, California in February. If the proof is in the pudding, then these three are an amazing advertisement as they finished first, second and fifth in the competition. Stewart was an impressive competitor in Anaheim, taking home his fifth straight win of the 2009 Monster Energy AMA Supercross. Stewart led all 20 laps of the race. He is also the 2008 AMA Motocross champion and the 2007 AMA Supercross Champion. See your favorite rider by reserving AMA Supercross Series tickets.
Stewart, whose nickname is "Bubba," has taken the supercross world by storm in the past few years. His first experience on a dirt bike came at the tender age of three, and he started racing just a year later. At the age of six, he had already racked up nearly a dozen amateur titles. When most teenagers are looking to get their driver's license, Stewart decided to turn pro. This was after he had won 11 American Motorcyclist Association Amateur National titles, showing he was more than ready to go pro. The motocross world agreed as he was named the 2002 Rookie of the Year. Two years later, he won the AMA 125 East Supercross Championship as well as the AMA 125 Motocross National Championship. Stewart was just getting started. He joined an elite group of only one other rider in 2008 when he had the perfect season, winning all of his 24 races. He also won the AMA Speed Athlete of the Year. On top of all of his motocross accomplishments, Stewart is also breaking race barriers by being the first African American in his sport to reach such heights.
Nearly always on Stewart's heels, Chad Reed first entered the league in 2001 from Australia with two Australian Supercross Championships. The wins didn't garner him much recognition in the states, but finishing second in the 2001 World Grand Prix certainly had the sport taking notice. By 2004, he was a top competitor in the sport, and he eventually won the AMA Supercross Championship. He had another top season in 2005 before he slipped in standings because of injuries in 2005. He finished just behind Stewart in 2007. Both are undoubtedly fighting for the 2009 crown.
Grant has also been a top competitor in the sport. The Riverside, California native is a relative newcomer compared to the two above, first turning pro in 2005. The next year, he ended the season second in the Eastern division of the Supercross Lite series. He was also third in the Motocross Lites series. He pushed through in injuries in 2007 to end up seventh in the West Supercross Lites division. He finished the 2005 season in fifth place. He is just now making his run toward some of the bigger titles in the sport, and fans are expecting a lot from this young rider.
