Why Use A Dog Head Collar
by Josh Whitford
There are many reasons why a head collar is the best collar for a dog. They are becoming more and more popular with dogs of all sizes, but especially medium to large dogs.
First of all, the purpose of a collar is to gain proper control of the dog during a walk. A head collar like a Gentle Leader gives the human more control than a dog.
The reason a dog Gentle Leader gives the human more control than the dog is because part of the collar fits over the dog's muzzle like a horse halter. When a horse wears a halter, the human controls the head of the horse, and therefore the body of the horse. It is the same concept with a dog.
When a dog wears a head collar, the owner controls the dog's head, and therefore the dog looses the ability to pull. The point is to teach the dog to walk nicely on a leash in heel position or at least to stop pulling.
Wearing a head collar often has a calming affect on the dog. This is because the dog is under control.
We've all seen dogs that are lunging and pulling while wearing a choke collar. They make that panting and choking sound because they are so excited and out of control. When a dog wears a head collar, the dog remains calm and well behaved.
Choke collars and prong collars can hurt a dog's neck if they are not used properly. These kinds of collars should hang loosely on a dog's neck, and tightened only for quick "pops" or corrections
Unfortunately, most people do not use choke or prong collars properly and are often kept tight at all times. A choke collar can literally choke a dog. It can also damage the dog's throat. A prong collar can also do the same thing, or the prongs can actually did into the dog's neck with an especially strong puller.
A Halti or Gentle Leader will not harm the dog's throat. It will simply fit securely around the dog's neck and muzzle and prevent the dog from pulling.
A good tool to use when the dog has a tendency to pull is the head collar. Sometimes a new area such as a park can cause a dog to be especially excited or anxious.
Once the dog is behaving well, it is easy to slip the nose part off so the dog will be wearing the collar just like a normal, nylon collar.
Head collars are also great when introducing a dog to biking. It's much safer to bike with a dog when the dog is under control and is not able to easily pull.
There are some misunderstandings about head collars. Sometimes people see them and think the dog is wearing a muzzle. Muzzles and head collars are two completely different things.
A muzzle prevents a dog from biting. But a Halti or Gentle Leader does not stop a dog from biting. It does not stop the dog from opening his or her mouth at all. A dog wearing a Halti can still bite, drink, pant, lick, eat and drink.
