Motorcycle Freedom
by Harvey Peever
What is the fascination with the motorcycle? It's hot on hot days (no air conditioning here) and cold on cold or wet days. Yet, huge numbers of bikers ride every chance they get. Whether it's a scooter or a Harley, owner's love to ride. Around the city or on the open highway there is a distinctly different feeling to riding as opposed to driving.Who are these people that shun the luxury of an automobile to brave the elements?
Today, anyone -- from any walk of life -- is enjoying the thrill of motorcycling. Men and women of all ages hit the road and soak up the sun's rays -- or brave the elements when the sun isn't shining -- to relish the bond between man/woman and machine. Shunning the protection from bugs, rain and wind these individuals strike out on their own (or with a group) to experience what could be likened to horseback riders of a different time.
The cowboy of days past and today's motorcycle enthusiasts have much in common. Cruising down the highway on your bike has become the modern day equivalent of the riding your trusty stead down the trials of long ago. Packing your bike with the bare essentials is like those that carried their bedroll and a few other necessities strapped on the back of a horse. Gas has replaced hay and a helmet or bandanna has replaced the wide brimmed cowboy hat but you are still required to put you leg over the beast before you can head out.
From humble beginnings, the motorcycle offered something for those that dared to follow a different path. Those faint of heart may not grasp the fascination of riding the open road but for those that do the reward can be seen in their weathered faces. A look of contentment appears to be the common denominator amongst them. Stiff backs, sore arms and various other ailments seem to be a small price to pay for the opportunity to be part of a growing number of die hard riders.
